Man, I'm glad to hook up with this site! My first H2O VW was had about 1987- a 76 american rabbit with a heron engine with side-draft mikunis, cam, recurve dist, exhaust and bilstein/suspension techniques suspension. I drove the hell out of it and countinuously tortured the local motorheads with my import terror.
Too many tickets led to my second rabbit-a 78 with the 1.5l (cast crank). It installed boge/suspension techniques, 4-to-1 header and g-grind cam, but I installed a newer 84 close ratio 5-speed tranny. This combo ran dead even with my brothers 84 gti and was lots of fun too!
I moved on to A2's and currently a vr6 gti, but I have a special place in my heart for A1's. Currently I'm part of a race team in SCCA with a G Production rabbit (#54 chuck mathis at '03 runoffs) and an 84 gti in Improved Touring Class B. We have a mold for carbon fiber hoods and a re currently making molds for boxed fenders for the Prod car.
Through some clever trading, I ended up with the heron engine, but the block and pistons were ruined;however, the head survives! I'm waiting patiently for another old rabbit to come along, so the heron engine will have a new home! The midwest portion of America is brutal on older cars and finding one with repairable rust is impossible! I found a diesel '80 model, but the round headlight rabbit is what I'm after.
I hope to learn lots from you all and hope to offer some as well!
