I and a friend have just purchased a Feb 1976 2 door white rabbit.. From the original owner!! It has never been in the rain and everything is in perfect shape!! I was wondering when the swallowtail ended? Has anybody figured out the vin-cut off date for this?? This had to have been one of the first rabbits to Not be a swallow tail..? A friend on mine has a 2/76 and is a swallow.. but mine is also 2/76 and is not a swallow? it has all that should be a swallow-as it has a smoothie hood, thin trim, rain gutter vents..etc. It also has a one piece rubber floor mat that go through-out the floor of the car front to back.. Never seen that before? No chrome trim around the windows or in the seals,, It has all one piece seals like a 83 GTi? Wtf? This car is a time capsule 78K on it!! Just wondering.. d**n! I wish it was a swallow!!!!!!!!! G-

No specific cut-off that anyone has found. The tail panel lasted as long as they had the parts laying around on the assembly line.
Your friend's '76 sounds like a '76 I once had with the rubber floor mat instead of the carpet. Talk about your base model. Your friend's car probably does not have a brake booster either and only one side mirror. Probably does not have a rear defogger as well. Yes, the seals are exactly the same as a Rabbit GTI.
Out of my own curiosity see if the glass on the car is clear or is green glass.
Post some pictures. Are you in the States?

mines registered January 1976, built October 1975 smoothie hood swallowtail rear panel early wings with no recess for chrome sill striping no arch liners its an LS so has electric washer jets etc.
yet i have heard of 1975 cars coming out of the factory without the swallowtail rear but still with smoothie hoods and early spec wings etc.

Hello guys,
I have a "standard" 1976, all rubber floor as you describe, one only counter, "swallow" style front bonnet and rear lights, metal lever on rear hatch (not a gaz strut) etc. I would say that starting with the chassi 176 ... we are in the 1976 year model in summer 1975, no ? The registration date is not the birth date of our Golfs ... a car built in year model 1975 can be kept in a show-room and registered in 02/1976 for example. So ... the question is still alive : "when was the last Swallow built ?!" Harald (France)

I would say that starting with the chassi 176 ... we are in the 1976 year model in summer 1975, no ? yes, that's true, 1976 year model startet in Summer (august) 1975 The registration date is not the birth date of our Golfs ... a car built in year model 1975 can be kept in a show-room and registered in 02/1976 for example. and that's both also true, correct! December 1975 That's not for sure, it's a mystery after all these years, late 1975 or maybe earlie 1976 is possible, none know's it for sure, even not the people at the VW company.
