Hi, I bought a ’76 golf recently Vin 176 316 1392 And I’m trying to figure out if it’s a original Swallowtail or not. Because I can see that the car had rear damage in the past. And therefore the rear panel has been replaced , I think at least 20 years ago when looking at the paint where the repair took place and there’s no bondo at the seams but lead, tin or whatever they uses back in the day) So did they repair the car originally or did they put in a ‘wrong’ rear panel ( on purpose) thats the big question . But I don’t think that’s the case. Because it’s a old damage and back then a swallowtail wasn’t a collectors car. And they probably would have updated the rear panel tot 77-79 or even to 80-83. I think(Hope) it’s been repaired originally. Considering the car is still 100% original even paint and not restored but I want to know for sure. So does anybody know. What the last VIN nr. Is with a swallowtail rear panel. And which date / VIN nr they started using the (76)77-79 straight rear panel? I tried contacting the VW museum but they responded that a swallowtail was only produced in 1974. So that’s pretty useless….. I hoped they would know more then me about that kind of stuff… Kind regards, Jason Holland
